COACH RAY has swam for the Blue Wave since he was 4 years old, and this will be his 4th year coaching the team. This will be Coach Ray's 2nd year as head coach. Ray was a 2 time All-State Swimmer for Anderson High School. Coach Ray also played water polo at Anderson where he was a 2 time qualifier of the All-Region Team, and was a member of the All-State Team during his senior season. Ray is currently a Senior at Texas A&M University pursuing a degree in Supply Chain Management, and has spent 2018 serving as a director for a Freshman Leadership Organization on campus! He was also the head coach for the Texas A&M club swim team and helped lead the team to finish 16th place at Nationals. Swimming has been a huge part of Ray's life and he is ready to help inspire the next generation of Blue Wave to share the same passion for the sport. He said that "This neighborhood has given me so much during my 21 years, and I want to give as much back to the kids as I possibly can." He is really looking forward to a fun and exciting season filled with team spirit, improvements in the water, and fun memories!
COACH HUDDIE has coached the Blue Wave since the summer of 1992 (Coach Danny was not even born until 1994). This will be her 26th season with the team!! All seven of her children were lucky enough to represent the Blue Wave and Balcones Woods has "treated us like family the entire time". "We feel blessed to have BWBW in our lives". Now, the next generation has started with her grandson swimming in the 6 & under group for the team. Coach Huddie attended the Olympic trials in 1972 and 1976 swimming the 200 Fly, 200 IM, and 400IM. She made the finals at the 1976 Olympic Trials in the 200 Fly and 400 IM. Coach Huddie was part of the early history of Title IX which allowed women to compete with scholarships at the collegiate level swimming for Cornell and the University of Florida. She is married to Kevin Murray, (recently aka "Mr. Huddie", when helping our team out to start the season). She loves seeing improvement in our kids in both the seasonal timeframe and over the years! She enjoys passing along a skill and exercise that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Something you might not know about our awesome coach: She is one of 15 children!
COACH BRANDON is affectionately known as "The Breaststroke Whisperer". Coach Brandon is entering his fourth season as a coach. A former All-District 1st Baseman for Anderson High School, his swimming claim to fame is being known as the 4th fastest 9/10 breaststroker in Blue Wave history. After his swimming abilities peaked in the summer of 2007, he's been taking aim at achieving "Balcones Woods Legend" status. All jokes aside, spending time with the Blue Wave is his favorite time of the year as he gets immense joy from spreading happiness and his goofy tendencies to the next generation of swimmers. Coach Brandon is extremely thankful for all the kindness and support the neighborhood has given him since he was a six year old swimming freestyle with a breaststroke kick. Brandon will be graduating from Texas A&M University this summer where he will receive a degree in Sports Management. He also worked with the Men's Basketball team as team manager. Whoop!
COACH DAN has been refusing to race at meets (as a 6&U), swimming (from 5-18), and coaching (from 18-22) with the BWBW for almost his entire life. The Blue Wave has been a second home for Dan, and a privilege that he is extremely grateful to the neighborhood for. While he doesn't time or track swimmers as obsessively as Coach Huddie, Dan's joy in coaching comes from teaching the swimmers about fun, hard work, and respect, both in and out of the pool - and he always has an unlimited supply of high-fives. Coach Dan hopes to help make the Blue Wave an inclusive team and community for kids of all different kinds." Coach Dan graduated this year with a degree in Exercise Science at the University of Texas at Austin. He is planning on pursuing a career in Physical Therapy.
COACH CLAIRE is in here second season with the Blue Wave. We are excited to have her back with the "family". Coach Claire is "so excited to have the privilege of helping coach our youngest Blue Wave swimmers this year! Our pre-team, 6 & Unders and 7/8s are working hard to be the best swimmers they can be, and it is such a joy to see their diligence translate into more ease and skill in the water! I cannot wait to see them grow over this season ahead of us!" Once upon a time Claire spent her summers as a Westover Heat Wave (now Orcas) and swam for St. Michael's Catholic Academy in high school. She was a lifeguard at Lost Creek Country Club and taught swim lessons for as many summers as she could - basically she has always been part fish and so it's completely natural for her to be back in the water with our next generation of Texans seeking gills. Also, if you see Berger on the heat sheet, yes I'm also momma to three new Blue Wave swimmers, Andrew who is 6, Evan who is 8, and Jackson who is 10. All of whom are loving the team and "think they've won the lottery to be swimming with their closest friends!"
COACH ALLISON is a native austinite. Allison started lifeguarding when she was 16 and taught swim lessons. She graduated high school and went to a Jr College where she was a member of the drill team. Coach Allison later transferred to the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of the Longhorn swim team. She later went to school and became an EMT-Paramedic. Coach Allison really enjoyed her career as a EMT for over 25 years. She has continued to teach swim lessons each and every year. "I'm divorced and have a beautiful little girl, for some reason I can't teach her to swim! Lol..... This is her first year swimming on the blue wave team". Coach Allison is thrilled to be one of our coaches. "All of the coaches, kids and their families have been so welcoming and I thank y'all so much". Allison is looking forward to meeting everyone and having a great summer!
COACH NOAH has been swimming for the Blue Waves since he was eight years old. From there his passion for swimming grew and he joined Texas Gold for club swimming. Once he reached high school he swam for Anderson all 4 years and helped set a school record in the 400 freestyle relay, and also won male individual athlete of the year. Noah also swam for Texas Longhorn Aquatics down at the UT swim center throughout high school. Noah's love for swimming has only grown during the past few years and he is looking forward to teaching others to swim fast! This is Noah's second year as Blue Wave coach. He will be entering the Navy and working with Special Forces in the fall of 2018.
COACH ALEX has swam on the Balcones Woods blue wave team since she was 6 years old and has also swam competitively since eighth grade. She is a graduate of Anderson high school where she excelled cheerleading, swimming and water polo. This will be her second year as coach of the Blue Wave. Alex has just completed her first year at Texas Christian University. She is working on a biochemical degree. Swimming for so many years has imprinted upon Alex and has a special place in her heart. She hopes to express the benefits and joy associated with being apart of such a unique swim team. Alex also hopes to enhance the idea of team and family to the team this upcoming season, "I have always loved being a part of such an awesome team that I can now call my family". She can't wait for all the exciting moments this season!
COACH BECCA has been swimming for the Blue Wave since she was six years old. She loves the full Blue Wave experience, from early swim meets and buddy practices, to teen movie nights and champs. She has always loved working with the younger kids and hopes to inspire another generation of Blue Wave swimmers. During the summer, Becca loves hanging out with friends and playing Ultimate Frisbee. When she is not at the pool, Becca can be found competing in science tournaments, teaching math, swing dancing, or sailing on Lake Travis. This is her first summer coaching Blue Wave. She will be entering her senior year fall 2018.
