COACH RAY has swam for the Blue Wave since he was 4 years old, and this will be his 5th year coaching the team. This will be Coach Ray's 3rd year as head coach. Ray was a 2 time All-State Swimmer for Anderson High School. Coach Ray also played water polo at Anderson where he was a 2 time qualifier of the All-Region Team, and was a member of the All-State Team during his senior season. Ray recently graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Supply Chain Management, and will be moving to Houston Texas in the fall to start his career with Expeditors. Ray spent his time at A&M serving as a director for a Freshman Leadership Organization on campus! He was also the head coach for the Texas A&M club swim team and helped lead the team to finish 16th place at Nationals. Swimming has been a huge part of Ray's life and he is ready to help inspire the next generation of Blue Wave to share the same passion for the sport. He said that "This neighborhood has given me so much during my 22 years, and I want to give as much back to the kids as I possibly can." He is looking forward to a fun and exciting final season filled with team spirit, improvements in the water, and fun memories!
COACH HUDDIE has coached the Blue Wave since the summer of 1992 (Coach Danny was not even born until 1994). This will be her 28th season with the team!! All seven of her children were lucky enough to represent the Blue Wave and Balcones Woods has "treated us like family the entire time". "We feel blessed to have BWBW in our lives". Now, the next generation has started with her grandson swimming in the 7-8 age group and twin granddaughters swimming in the 6 & under group for the team. Coach Huddie attended the Olympic trials in 1972 and 1976 swimming the 200 Fly, 200 IM, and 400IM. She made the finals at the 1976 Olympic Trials in the 200 Fly and 400 IM. Coach Huddie was part of the early history of Title IX which allowed women to compete with scholarships at the collegiate level swimming for Cornell and the University of Florida. She is married to Kevin Murray, (recently aka "Mr. Huddie", when helping our team out to start the season). She loves seeing improvement in our kids in both the seasonal timeframe and over the years! She enjoys passing along a skill and exercise that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. Something you might not know about our awesome coach: She is one of 15 children!
COACH LESLEY - Lesley is so excited to be back with the Mighty Blue Wave this summer. She swam for BW since she was 5 and went on to coach for 9 years before temporarily leaving Texas in 2016. She is currently traveling around the U.S. playing with different work and household projects. While swimming has always been her main outlet, she is a general fitness enthusiast and loves being a part of how Balcones Woods stays strong and movin'. Lesley is a graduate of Anderson High School and was a decorated swimmer on the swim and dive team. Lesley graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio a few years ago getting her degree in Kinesiology and set several records for their swim team.
COACH CLAIRE is in her third season with the Blue Wave. We are excited to have her back with the "family". Coach Claire is "so excited to have the privilege of helping coach our youngest Blue Wave swimmers this year! Our pre-team, 6 & Unders and 7/8s are working hard to be the best swimmers they can be, and it is such a joy to see their diligence translate into more ease and skill in the water! I cannot wait to see them grow over this season ahead of us!" Once upon a time Claire spent her summers as a Westover Heat Wave (now Orcas) and swam for St. Michael's Catholic Academy in high school. She was a lifeguard at Lost Creek Country Club and taught swim lessons for as many summers as she could - basically she has always been part fish and so it's completely natural for her to be back in the water with our next generation of Texans seeking gills. Also, if you see Berger on the heat sheet, yes I'm also momma to three Blue Wave swimmers, Andrew who is 8, Evan who is 10, and Jackson who is 12. All of whom are loving the team and "think they've won the lottery to be swimming with their closest friends!"
COACH YOUNG - It was in a pool where Coach Young learned a lot of life lessons: 1. If it doesn’t hurt sometimes, you aren’t doing it right. 2. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard, and the 3rd lesson is her favorite because it came to her from her club swim coach that she looked up to, if you want friends in life, you gotta stop complaining.
So how did Coach Young join the Blue Wave Fam Bam? Flash forward several years to a whole new state and group of friends. Back to School night at Murchison Middle School. Julie LaChance found out that Coach Young swam breast and IM at Eastern Illinois University, coaching at Blue Wave seemed like the best summer decision a middle school teacher could make. For real. Coach Young loves seeing her students outside of the typical classroom tapping into their interests and hobbies and has absolutely loved the warm welcome from the whole Blue Wave community.
When she isn’t coaching or teaching language arts, you can most likely find Coach Young at a yoga studio in north or south Austin or simply reading a good book. She wants to learn all Blue Wave names by the end of the season, so if you haven’t met her yet, say hello!
COACH ALEX has swam on the Balcones Woods blue wave team since she was 6 years old and has also swam competitively since eighth grade. She is a graduate of Anderson high school where she excelled cheerleading, swimming and water polo. This will be her third year as coach of the Blue Wave. Alex has just completed her second year at Texas Christian University. She is working on a biochemical degree. Swimming for so many years has imprinted upon Alex and has a special place in her heart. She hopes to express the benefits and joy associated with being apart of such a unique swim team. Alex also hopes to enhance the idea of team and family to the team this upcoming season, "I have always loved being a part of such an awesome team that I can now call my family". She can't wait for all the exciting moments this season!
